We are delighted to have Dr Beatriz IR de Oliveira present an anatomy course focussing on Upper and Lower limbs. Following a successful Anatomy refresher course in 2017, this course has been requested by many of our members. Dr Beatriz IR de Oliveira is a physiotherapist and lecturer at the School of Physiotherapy and Exercise Science at Curtin University. This course involves the study of the various structures of the upper limbs and their role in facilitating life’s many functions. Several strategies will be implemented to teach and encourage Occupational Therapists to apply their knowledge in palpatory anatomy, surface anatomy, postural analysis and clinical anatomy of the upper and lower limbs.

The course will be divided into four sessions:

Session (module) 1:
Palpatory anatomy: bony landmarks of the upper and lower limbs
Review main bony landmarks of the upper limb
Identify main bony landmarks of the upper and lower limbs through placatory anatomy
Understand clinical relevance of bony landmarks

Session (module) 2:
Surface anatomy: muscles of the upper and lower limbs
Review superficial muscles of the upper and lower limbs
Analyse surface anatomy and function of muscles of the upper and lower limbs

Session (module) 3:
Postural analysis: refresher
Practice postural analysis via the identification of landmarks and symmetry in the frontal and sagittal planes
Analyse scapulohumeral rhythm

Session (module) 4:
Clinical anatomy: upper limb
Review courses of major peripheral nerves arising from the brachial plexus
Review upper limb clinical presentations
Utilise anatomical knowledge to apply principles of clinical measurement

Palpatory/surface anatomy and postural analysis sessions require suitable clothing i.e. shorts and t-shirt, as well as sports bra or tank top underneath clothing. Participants must be ready to disrobe for this exciting practical course.
